All About Placenta Encapsulation

First let’s go over what the placenta is. When you’re pregnant, not only is your body growing a new baby- it’s growing a whole new organ! Starting by around week 12, the placenta will provide oxygen and nutrients to your growing baby and remove waste products from your baby's blood. It’s attached to the uterine wall and has a cord that attaches to the baby. The placenta shares the same blood type as the baby.

WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO CONSUME THEIR PLACENTA?!

Found in the placenta are hormones and iron.

Many of the women who encapsulate see these benefits:

  • Increase in oxytocin (the good feeling hormone)

  • Decrease in stress hormones

  • Increased energy

  • Reduced postpartum bleeding

  • Faster healing and recovery

  • Increased milk supply

  • Increased iron levels

  • Decrease in PPD/PPA

*There are a few women who will experience the opposite (or adverse) effects. If this happens, stop taking them. You can save them in a deep freeze to try later on, even during menopause!

HOW DOES THE PROCESS GO?

First we’ll have a prenatal meeting to go over the process, answer any questions, and make our plan.

A plan that will look like this:

After the placenta is born and your caregiver checks it over to help them see if any issues may arise. (To make sure it’s all in one piece and there’s not an obvious sign that you may have some retained placenta in your uterus.) You’ll take the placenta, put it on ice in a cooler I provide ahead of time, and get it to me within the first few hours to 72 hours (at the latest) after birth.

[If you are unsure you want to encapsulate I recommend enclosing your placenta in a few airtight bags and freezing it. We can always thaw it and encapsulate at a later date if you decide you’d like to!]

Using my blood borne pathogen training, food safety training, and placenta encapsulation training I will prepare your pills.

To sum it up, I will:

  • Wash it

  • Steam it

  • Cut it up

  • Dehydrate it

  • Grind it

  • Encapsulate it

  • Get your finished pills to you

All while following the safety guidelines!
